Fred Longworth, from Volume 2:2

Fred Longworth never recovered from the dire influences of Mad Magazine. In spite of this, he holds a B.A. in English Literature (San Diego  State University), and an MBA (National University). Self- employed for most of his adult life, Fred succumbed  to the intoxicants of poetry in the 1990's. Does anyone really care about this stuff? His poems have been published in Able Muse, Bloodroot, California Quarterly, Comstock Review, Pearl, Rattapallax, Spillway, Stirring, and the ubiquitous "et al." In fact, his life has largely consisted of "etc." and "et al," with an  extra dash of "moreover."

You try to put a first foot forward,
then the other,
but something's tied a tourniquet around one thigh,
turning it into vast numb pillar,
and the other seems to have a dozen extra knees.

Then, across the dance floor,
someone utterly beautiful forgives your lunge
and looks beyond your drag.
She smiles at you, and beckons.
You flutter like a drunken moth, tumbling toward
the only lamp on earth.

S. Whitaker, from Volume 2:2

S. Whitaker's poetry has appeared in dozens of journals. He is the literary review editor for The Broadkill Review, and a member of The National Books Critics Circle. He is the author of three chapbooks of poetry. He lives on the Eastern Shore of Virginia.

Here is a taste of "Sleeper Agent Love Letter," one of Whitaker's two poems in Volume 2:2:

Every other word is truth. To cipher the weal
take a pen and scratch out eyes. To shade, to cross.
My ghastly toe-headed conspirator, the pale is the knife wiped clean.

Diane Funston, from Volume 2:2

Diane Funston has been active in San Diego poetry, including the San Diego Poetry Annual, Magee Park Poets, GUTS, Summation, and most recently Lucid Moose of Long Beach. She co-founded the women's writing group SILK in Escondido, CA, and is a member of Writers and Books in Rochester, New York, her hometown. She divides her time between a home in Central Nevada and a cabin in the mountains in Tehachapi, CA. She holds a B.A. in Literature and Writing from CSU San Marcos.

Sharif Shakhshir, from Volume 2:2

Sharif Shakhshir is a Southern California native who suffers from an extreme case of Californication.  A hopeful screenwriter, novelist, poet, cartoonist, princess, butterfly, astronaut; he got his masters at the now stab-murdered Masters of Professional Writing program at USC which emphasized adaptability between writing forms. Sharif tends to pull together disparate ideas and make them play in the same sandbox together; usually, they play My Little Pony: Special Victims Unit. Sharif is unemployed, overweight, a person of color, a Hollywood cliché, and an intellectual. Given this combination, it is no surprise that loneliness is a prominent theme in Shakhshir’s work. Said work can be seen in other publications like The East Jasmine Review, Perceptions Magazine of the Arts, and Writing That Risks.  He is also on Twitter @Sharif12

Sharif contributed the longest piece published in Synesthesia to date, a story titled "The First Canine Uprising." Below is an excerpt.

Congregation

Once there was a boy who liked cats. This is the story about his dog. On the top of the hills behind Azusa, more than 200 canines are gathered to see this dog named “Roxie.” She is a mutt, white and mid-tone with black spots on her face, muzzle, and paws as if she had lost a fight with a fountain pen. Like many military leaders speaking to their troops before they die, she barks about freedom and tomorrows. The dogs are volunteer soldiers for her insurgency against human supremacy.
Spit falls to the soil at Roxie’s paws during the climax of her speech. She howls to the blackness of a new moon. Her congregation howls along under a giant white cross, their chorus echoing over a cliff down to the city lights below. They howl on the park benches tattooed with bad graffiti. They howl from the bushes littered with spent lighters and cigarette butts. They howl from the bottom of the westward sloping hill which makes a natural stage for the canine insurgents to see their leader.

Stephen Linsteadt, from Volume 2:2

Stephen Linsteadt is a poet and a painter. He is also the founder of Scalar Heart Connection and author of the book with the same title, which is concerned with humanity’s connection, or lack thereof, with Nature, the Earth, and the global community. Linsteadt's poetry is a reflection of this outreach, and explores the process of painting as a road to self discovery.

Hope Ann Valentine, from Volume 2:2

Hope Ann Valentine is a freewheeling twenty-one-year old currently living in Northern California. She is a firm believer in Bob Dylan ethics and WWJD. She'll be relocating to the East Coast this spring after she graduates with a degree in government and journalism. Her main occupation is being a child of the Earth, but she hopes to pursue a career in international affairs journalism and to keep adventuring. R. S. Gwynn, from Volume 2:2

R. S. Gwynn was born in Eden, North Carolina, in 1948. He attended Davidson College, where he played football, twice won the Vereen Bell Award for creative writing, and served as a member of Davidson's championship team on the General Electric College Bowl. After receiving his B.A. in 1969, he did graduate work at the Breadloaf School of English and entered graduate school at the University of Arkansas, earning the M.A. in 1972 and the M.F.A. in 1973. While a student at Arkansas, he received the John Gould Fletcher Award for Poetry. He has also won the Breakthrough Award from the University of Missouri Press and, in 2004, the Michael Braude Award for Light Verse from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

He has taught at Lamar University since 1976, and is the editor of the Penguin Pocket Anthology series from Pearsona/Longman. His new collection of poems is Dogwatch, from Measure Press.

Below is an excerpt from the satirical essay Gwynn contributed to Volume 2:2 — "Is There Something Ghotiy in This Class?"

          “Wait!” said another student (Mr. B+), a young male with cardinal dreadlocks, dental braces and a pierced uvula, which he would display upon request. “‘Read’ could be a pun for ‘red’; put that together with ‘Kennedy’ and you've got something.  My grandfather who fought against France in one of those world wars always said that Kennedy, who was president back in the forties, was a ‘red.’  He meant a commie. I've been taking an elective called ‘The Red Scare Deconstructed: A Kinder, Gentler Stalin.’We call him Papa Joe in our class.”

Reece A. J. Chambers, from Volume 2:2

Reece A. J. Chambers is a twenty-one year old writer from Northamptonshire, England. He graduated from the University of Northampton with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Creative Writing in 2014. His work has been published in Red Kite, a book compiled by the university and available online, while the bulk of his poetry can be seen on Hello Poetry (prose on WordPress). He is influenced by many writers, including Sylvia Plath, Nick Hornby, Jack Kerouac, J. D. Salinger and J. K. Rowling.

          I like when it begins   the white
          icing of a dream   and the ones I only know
          with my eyes closed   glow like rubies

Roxy Brown, from Volume 2:2

Roxy Brown is a writer from San Diego who is centered in a  unique but contemporary style. Her influence starts with cacoethes scribendi — "the insatiable urge or itch to write" — and is fueled further by muses such as Sylvia Plath, Philip Larkin, Khalil Gibran, Anais Nin, and Natalie Eilbert. She currently is in the process of obtaining her degree in neuroscience with an emphases in creative writing.

Below is an excerpt of Brown's poem, "Neophobia," from Volume 2:2:

          Two years ago
          the garden of Eden, apart
          from its virginity, was something.

R. W. Haynes, from Volume 2:2

R. W. Haynes writes out of South Texas, where he is frequently reminded of William Blake's assertion, "Without Contraries is no progression." He's recently completed a novel and hopes that this year the Muses will help him finish his second book on the playwright Horton Foote.

Dylan Flint, from Volume 2:2

Dylan Flint is a Washington native with deep ties to the Pacific Northwest and Seattle. Currently a full time University of Washington student, Dylan enjoys philosophical debates, spirituality, and pumpkin spice lattes. His job involves building and renovating old wooden boats, and he is currently accepting applications for an around-the-world sailing voyage. In his rare moments of free time, Dylan can be found practicing yoga on the roof of his Capitol Hill Apartment, or exploring the deep complexities of the human condition in meditation.


Below is an excerpt of Flint's piece in Volume 2:2, "<fireflies>," which originally appeared on Hiibye.com in June 2014.


My aunt politely corrected me, “Well actually if you know a lobsterman you could go out on his boat, catch a lobster, and then head to one of the islands out there, and boil him over a fire. I think that would actually be the freshest way.”


I asked her if this was a long lost dream of hers. You know, with the whole burly lobsterman snatching a crustacean out of the murky depths of the forbidding Atlantic, and just the two of them, sitting there on an island around a man-made fire where they would wait in each other’s arms for their booty to boil, before tearing apart its body and devouring its sweet meat.

John McKernan, from Volume 2:2


John McKernan – who grew up in Omaha Nebraska – is now retired after teaching 41 years at Marshall University. He lives – most of the year – in West Virginia where he edits ABZ Press, which publishes an annual poetry magazine and publishes each year a first book of poetry in the ABZ Poetry Prize Contest.  His most recent work is a selected poems book Resurrection of the Dust. He has published poems in The Atlantic Monthly, The Paris Review, The New Yorker, Virginia Quarterly Review, The Journal, Antioch Review, Guernica, Field, and many other magazines.

Shane Castaneda and Melonie Weismann, from Volume 2:2

Shane Castaneda, a native of San Diego, California specializing in visual arts, provides the front and back cover art for Volume 2:2. His interests in the visual arts are expansive, a fact reflected in his greatly differing styles. He considers his influences to be all graffiti enthusiasts (living or dead), Jean-Michel Basquiat, Andy Warhol, and the sometimes naturally barren, sometimes over-industrialized landscapes of southern California.

Melonie Weismann provides all of the internal art for Volume 2:2. She craves the texture of oil paints, the click of her camera's moving parts, and the friction of colored pencils on paper. Trained at the University of California at Santa Barbara, her thoughts often revolve around the fertilization of creation within destruction, the power of collective consciousness, and minimalist non-attachment. She enjoys blending the real and the surreal, building bridges between the real world and the dream world for those who don't yet know them as one and the same. A transplant from northern California, Melonie finds inspiration in the foreign flora and barren desert landscapes of the southern region. She is currently focused on designing immersive audiovisual experiences with the Triptych collective in San Diego, California.

Sabrina Elliott, the artist whose work adorns the new volume, is an illustrator who focuses on digital and traditional mediums. Some of her influences include pop surrealism, pulp horror imagery, Japanimation, and early Rock and Roll culture. She graduated from the School of Visual Arts in 2013 and currently resides in Brooklyn, New York. Her zine, Infinite Tenderness, was recently published by Valley Cruise Press. Reece A.J. Chambers, Sicily Famolaro, and Kate Harding, from Volume 2:1

Reece A.J. Chambers is a 21-year-old writer and student from Northamptonshire, England, currently at the University of Northamptonshire. He has been writing prose for 10 years, and poetry qith increasing frequence since 2011. His influences include Sylvia Plath, Ted Hughes, Simon Armitage, the Beat Generation writers, and Nick Hornby. The vast majority of his poems are available online at Hello Poetry.

Reece contributed two poems to Volume 2:1, "Come, Autumn" and "Stagnant," the latter a remarkable and chilling short lyric that will be previewed here:

                    You've done it now.
                    Opened your mouth,
                    hoping the ice starts to thaw.

                                  ...

                    Everyone moves forward.
                    Is that so?

Sicily Famolaro is a San Diego native. She is a sophomore at San Diego State University, studying English. She has been writing poetry leisurely for a few years, but only seriously began writing the spring of 2013. Since last springtime, a few of her poems have been published through the university and other independent publications. Her style varies from sonnets to free verse—she enjoys experimenting with form, though she has yet to solidify her aesthetic. With the poems she’s written up to this point, she focuses on evocative images, and the personification of emotion and thought.

Here's an excerpt from her poem "Irene," startling in its moving simplicity:

                    Irene in the lotus pose,
                    wrinkled sun hands
                    opened, a question
                    blooming in the heart of her palms

Kate Harding (a.k.a. Penny Perry) has been widely published as a poet, most recently in Lilith and the San Diego Poetry Annual. She was the first woman admitted to the American Film Institute's screenwriting program, and a film based on her script A Berkeley Christmas aired on PBS. Her first collection of poetry, Santa Monica Disposal & Salvage was published by Garden Oak Press in 2012.

Harding's poems have power and wax confessional. For instance, take a look at the ending of "Holdfast" from the new volume:

                   I should have laced our fingers together
                   like strands of kelp in a ball at the beach.

                   I should have held you back from the tide.

Alejandro Juárez Crawford, from Volume 2:1

Alejandro Juárez Crawford has performed his serial poems at Galapagos Arts Space, the Blue Note, SOBs, and the Bowery Poetry Club, and has published them in Streetnotes and Stonefence. He regularly contributes opinion pieces for US News & World Report's Economic Intelligence blog, is a senior consultant with Acceleration Group, and teaches at both the New School, Baruch College of the City University of New York and the Fashion Institute of Technology.

In his own words, Crawford's serial poem "Leaning Music" is "a kind of 'poem of education,' if I may put it that way, education in those rhythms of existence that run counter to the dominant ones set by traffic lights and lunch breaks, conference calls and dinner dates."
  
                    Learn the song quickly
                      so it forms a million rhythms
                    that converge   and then depart,
                      but enter   the nature
                        of each other:

Olivier Bochettaz and Marie Lecrivain, from Volume 2:1

Born in the French Alps, Olivier Bochettaz recently migrated to Long Beach in order to join the local community of poets at the M.F.A. in poetry program at the California State University. His poetry can be found in RipRap, Cadence Collective and Remedial Art, and his critical works in DUMAS Archives.

His poem in Volume 2:1, "Telluric Symphony", is a naturalist's dream come true.

          there in a green mild bushy bower

                filled with resinous buds and sleepy flowers

                      is a crossway-inn for blue birds

Marie Lecrivain is a photographer, writer, and the editor-publisher of poeticdiversity: the litzine of Los Angeles. She is also the editor of several anthologies, including Sybaritic Press's upcoming Near Kin: Words and Art Inspired by Octavia E. Butler.

Her poem in Volume 2:1, "In the Shadow of Gary Numan, High Priest of the X-Gens", is a narrative of nostalgia that maintains intense immediacy. If you're an X-Gen, it's sure to take you back.

          We are golems who wish to shed our status quo and pogo like we
          used to.

Marta Rodríguez Iborra and Janice D. Soderling, from Volume 2:1

Marta Rodríguez Iborra, writing out of Universitat Pompeu Fabra, where she currently combines a position at the Graduate School with doctoral research on women's modern autobiographical literature, ushers in one of life's purposes in her poem "It":

                    you are not born to dig holes
                    but to oar in foreign seas

The above quotation is taken from "Red Earth" by Janice D. Soderling who has two flash fictions in Synesthesia Volume 2:1. The second story (or is it a story?), "The Stonefish: Intelligent Protection Strategies and Natural Selection", appears on page 32. Soderling has published fiction, poetry, and translations in many international journals. She lives and writes in Sweden.

A. Maureen Tant, from Volume 2:1

"Can we forget what we already know?" is the question posed by Miss Tant at the opening of her fascinating essay "In History/We Could Have". Tant, with the help of Tom Stoppard and Barton Smock, takes us through a whirlwind of poignant statements regarding our relationship to human history and memory, my favorite of which is "Humanity renders nothing indelible, meaning it also never experiences catharsis."

In the current volume (2:1) Tant has another rapturous essay, "Releasing Comfort", as well as a book-review-turned-obituary for her friend, the late, great Ned Vizzini.

Ken Wagner and J. Ryan Bermuda, from Volume 2:1

Ken Wagner is a  poet hailing from Seattle, Washington who also works as a volunteer poetry teacher. He has studied under David Wagoner for the last three years. Wagner's poetry is intimate, illuminating, and sonorous.

J. Ryan Bermuda resides in Redlands, California. His experiences as a foster parent have inspired his upcoming poetry manuscript From Hell to Breakfast. Bermuda's poetry contains imagery so striking that it practically leaves the mind reeling.
